The Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors was established in 1931 to protects the safety and welfare of the public. It continues to remain a bridge between TN consumers and contractors helping to assure fair construction practices.
In the state of Tennessee, a Home Improvement (HI) license is required in some counties on residential remodeling projects that cost $3,000-$25,000. These counties include:
- Bradley
- Davidson
- Knox
- Marion
- Shelby
- Rutherford
- Haywood
- Hamilton
- Robertson
The HI license must be bonded and insured and requires a written contracts.
A general Contractor license is required on projects totalling $25,000 or more. This price includes materials and labor costs. A contractor must have this license before he can even bid on a project. Masonry subcontractors require a contractor’s license when the project totals $100,000 or more.
Contractors cannot use another state’s license in Tennessee, however the trade exam may be waived.
Licensed contractors must carry General Liability and Workers’ Compensation insurance.
